Term 3 - Issue 2 2025
Principals Report

We are just over the half-way point for term 3, it has been very busy so far, and there is still a lot more happening over the coming weeks. Parents, please keep an eye on all correspondence from the school via Seesaw. And yes, there is a lot of posts at times, but we need to make sure we are keeping you up to date on everything happening.
Finally, please remember that there is a lot of sickness going on at the moment, if your child is sick, please keep them home. Some days our office area is looking like the emergency department with sick kids lined up waiting to go home. Luckily the warmer weather is coming very soon!
Book Week Parade
Another Book Week Parade is done and didn’t everyone look great! It is always great to see how much our whole community gets into this event each year. Thanks to all the parents for supporting this event as always, it is really appreciated!
It is great to see the amount of reading starting to increase across the school, we are seeing more kids wanting to pick up a book now as they like reading and not because they have to. Please keep the home reading going at home. Remember reading to your child makes such a huge difference in their reading development.
Mrs Oakley's hard work setting up and manning the Book Fair paid off with a total of $1780 in books being sold. This gives the school $534 to purchase new books for your children to borrow from the library.
Father’s and Special Person Breakfast
Our Father’s and Special Person Breakfast will be held on Wednesday September 3rd starting at 8:25am and finishing at 9:30am. We are keeping it simple; egg and bacon rolls cooked on the BBQ and hot drinks. There will be plenty of seating in the hall for everyone. Guests are welcome to head into classrooms before or after they have had something to eat for a look at what is going on in the rooms.
To help with catering we sent home an RSVP form last week. Can you please make sure this is returned to school, so we have an idea of how much food we are ordering. There is no cost at all for this event, we just want as many families in as possible.
Parent and Teacher Meetings – Thursday September 18th
Our one night only parent and teacher meetings will be on Thursday 18th September starting at 3:15pm and the final meeting starting at 5:00pm. We only do the one night in term 3 as our numbers are normally fairly low. If you wish to make an appointment, please click the link below:

A reminder that you are welcome to organise a meeting with your child's teacher at any point during the year to see how they are going, please do not leave it to only parent and teacher meeting times.
Assemblies – Early Pick Up
Parents, if you are taking your children home early after an assembly, you are NOT to go directly to classroom. You must go to the office, and they will organise for your child to be sent down to the office.
This is a basic safety requirement for all schools across our state. All students must be signed out from the school office if it is during collection hours, so we know who is onsite at all times if we have any form of emergency. In addition, this is also a safeguarding requirement as we cannot have anyone, regardless of who you are, wandering into classrooms when they choose.
Enrolments 2026
As mentioned, we are working on classes and other planning for 2026. Part of this is ensuring we know who is at our school next year as it can have a big effect on our staffing. Please contact the office if you think there is information we might need to know, including:
- If you are moving from our school to another for any reason.
- You know if someone who might be due to come to kinder in 2026 who might not have enrolled with us yet.
A reminder that our school has grown considerably over the past few years, and we are now getting close to our capacity limits, which means we are only accepting new enrolments from our intake area, unless there are specific circumstances that are in line with DECYP Policies.
Kind Regards,
Phil Novak
Principal
Literacy Update from Miss Creese

Literacy Update
DECYP Key literacy messages for parents/carers and families
You might have noticed some changes to the way we are teaching reading in our school.
We are changing the way we teach reading to make sure every child has the skills they need to succeed when they leave school. Every Tasmanian government school is committed to providing children and young people with high-quality, evidence-based, structured literacy lessons.
Learning to read is a skill that needs to be taught. It is not something we are born knowing how to do. Teachers are using evidence-based teaching strategies, so your child learns how to read in ways that are proven to be successful. Your child will be learning to read in an explicit and structured way. This means that they will learn foundational literacy skills one at a time. They will build on each skill to become a confident reader.
Our students are spending 60 minutes every day focused on building the literacy skills they need to learn to read in the early years and become confident readers throughout primary and secondary school. We’re proud to be part of this statewide effort to provide structured literacy lessons that are proven to work. Thank you for your ongoing support as we help every student succeed.
A series of information will be shared over this term and next around the Big 6, UFLI and Word Origins.
Home Reading at Bagdad Primary
At Bagdad Primary we pride ourselves on consistent practices around the school. One new practice we have adapted is Home Reading and how that looks. Every Wednesday is home reading change over day school wide. We encourage our P-2 students to take home 1 or 2 decodables and read them over the week. Reading the same books repeatedly develops strong reading skills.
Our students in Year 3 to 6, have the option to take home a library book, book from the classroom or read from Storybox. Please keep an eye out on seesaw for messages regarding home reading check in’s for years 3-6.
Aussie of the Month - August

Congratulations to Ivy for being our Aussie of the Month for August.
Ivy shows kindness to others, always makes responsible choices and demonstrates a strong commitment to her learning. Ivy's positive attitude and efforts are an example to others in our school community.
Kinder with Miss Matthews

Kinder Quolls and Kinder Roos have been busy building their number knowledge through hands-on maths activities. We have been learning to recognise numerals, count objects and make collections. As a bonus, these activities also gave us a chance to strengthen our fine motor skills!

1/2 with Miss Sarker

1-2 Sarker and 1-2 Balzer went on an exciting excursion last Thursday to Molesworth Environment Centre. We learned a lot about teamwork, problem solving, and how to overcome challenges.

3/4 with Miss Williams

In 3/4 Williams we have been learning about informative texts with a focus on Australia. We are researching the states and territories of Australia and summarising the information into our own words and comparing how Australia has changed prior to and post colonisation. Students have been enjoying learning the skills needed to be a researcher.

Music with Mr Wood

In music this term we have been covering a lot of different material. We have been looking at different musical notes, practising keeping a steady beat and of course having lots of fun learning to play songs on different instruments!
